How online notarization works: from ID check to electronic seal
A practical guide to preparing for a remote online notarization, joining the live session, signing, and receiving your completed document.
Before your appointment
Have the document ready in a digital format and ask the person or organization receiving it whether they accept an electronically notarized copy. Check that your name on the document matches the identification you plan to use. Keep the document unsigned until the live session unless the notary gives you different instructions.
Identity and technology
You will need a device with a camera and microphone, a reliable internet connection, and an acceptable photo ID. The secure platform may ask you to photograph your ID and complete additional identity checks. Use a quiet, well-lit space where the notary can see and hear you clearly.
The live signing
The notary meets you by live video, confirms your identity and willingness to sign, reviews the notarial act required, and watches the electronic signing. If a document requires a witness, mention that before booking so the arrangement can be confirmed.
After the session
Once the notarial act is complete, the document receives an electronic notarial certificate and seal. You receive the completed file electronically. Save a copy, then send it to the receiving party using its preferred delivery method.
