What ID should you prepare for an online notary?
Get your identification and device ready before a remote notarization appointment.
Start with a current photo ID
Have a current, government-issued photo ID available. The precise identification method is confirmed through the notary platform, so ask in advance if your ID is expired, damaged, or issued outside the United States. Do not assume a photo of an ID saved on your phone will replace the physical ID.
Make the scan readable
Clean the camera lens and sit somewhere with good light. Be ready to show the front and back of the ID without glare. Your name and details should be legible when you hold it up to the camera.
Check your device
Use a phone, tablet, or computer with a working camera and microphone. Allow the browser to access them and make sure your internet connection is stable. If you are joining from abroad, confirm the appointment time in your local time zone.
Avoid an avoidable delay
Keep the document unsigned until you meet with the notary. Have the full document available, know whether anyone else must sign, and mention any witnesses when you request the appointment. If the receiving party has special instructions, share those before the session.
